Gustav Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter of the Art Nouveau era. He had a major role in shaping Austria’s reputation as a cultural centre, as well as initiating and developing one of the most progressive art movements in Vienna. Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was one of the greatest Austrian symbolist painters of the Art Nouveau era. His works are characterized by an ornate gold style that would come to be known as his “Golden Style.” He was a co-founder and president of Wiener Akademie in 1898 and, as a professor of painting from 1891 to 1918 at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, he exerted considerable influence. Gustav Klimt is widely regarded as being a founder of the Vienna, or Secessionist, art movement. The painting “The Kiss” was one of his most famous paintings. Gustav Klimt was born in 1862 in Baumgarten, near Vienna, and he died on February 6, 1918. Klimt’s most famous paintings are The Kiss and The Beethoven Frieze, both of which define his distinctive style.
